First of all, let us tell you that Bavarian cuisine, the region where Munich is located, is a mix of traditional and hearty recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. This includes Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), Weißwurst (white sausage), Sauerbraten (sweet and sour roast), and Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), and you can also taste some typical German dishes.

You should also know that the breweries are the heart of Bavarian social life, where people gather to enjoy good food, a drink of beer, and of course, great company. Several of the places we recommend in the article are of this style and personally, we find them the most interesting.

Shall we check out some of the most recommended restaurants in Munich? Prost and Guten Appetit!

  • We try to keep the articles up to date, but something may slip by. If you find any of the listed restaurants closed or prices different, let us know to update it. Thanks.

1. Augustiner-Keller

This outdoor brewery, one of the largest and oldest in the city, seems to us to be one of the best options for eating in Munich, especially if you're traveling in the summer. Its garden can accommodate hundreds of people, ensuring a festive and fun atmosphere.

Having a few pints of the house beer (Augustiner), paired with pretzels or a roast chicken with potatoes, is quite an experience. Prices: half-liter beers for about €4-5 and dishes for €10-20.

2. Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal

Weisses Bräuhaus im Tal is another must-visit spot for dining in Munich. With over 400 years of history, this restaurant is famous for its wheat beer and for being one of the few places that still serve Weißwurst (white sausage) prepared traditionally, accompanied by sweet mustard and pretzels.

The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed, ideal for a quiet meal after exploring the old town of the city. Additionally, it's one of the cheaper places to eat in central Munich: less than €10!

3. Gaststätte Bergwolf

If you're looking for an informal yet delicious spot, Gaststätte Bergwolf is your place. In fact, we think it's one of the best options for cheap eats in Munich It's a small but popular joint where they prepare some of the best currywurst in Munich. What is it? A German classic: a Frankfurt-style sausage grilled or fried, served with a generous portion of crispy fries and a very characteristic curry ketchup sauce.

Its casual atmosphere makes it a perfect place for a quick meal or an informal dinner after a day of sightseeing and a few beers.

4. Hofbräuhaus am Platzl

The Hofbräuhaus is almost synonymous with Munich, so we cannot forget about this brewery. Founded in 1589, it is cozy, lively, and always packed with people. You will be greeted by experienced waiters, long wooden tables, and endless pints of the best beer in the city.

We should warn you that it's not the cheapest place to eat in Munich, but we always recommend stopping by at least once. Moreover, its Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, is a meal you'll remember for a long time. Some reference prices are: half-liter mug for €5.50 and the knuckle costs about €22 (but there are cheaper options).

And an extra point in its favor: live music from traditional Bavarian bands will make you feel like you're at Oktoberfest, no matter the time of year. Plus, you'll be in one of the best breweries in Munich, perhaps the prettiest of all.

5. Andy's Krablergarten

We can't overlook the place that probably serves the best schnitzel in the city: Andy's Krablergarten. Their breaded steaks are not only delicious, but they are also huge, so you can share one between two people (they come with fries or potato salad), or dare to devour a whole schnitzel and feel like a Bavarian god XD.

The prices for the breaded steaks are around €20. And be aware, at the time we wrote this article, they did not accept cards and only took cash (at least when we visited).

6. Schmalznudel - Cafe Frischhut

And to wrap up, are you looking for a place to have coffee and something sweet? Schmalznudel - Café Frischhut is one of our favorite options. It's basically a cozy café that became famous for its Schmalznudeln, a type of fried Bavarian donut that is simply irresistible. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, this treat is perfect to accompany with a hot cup of coffee.

So now you know, if your hotel doesn't include breakfast or you fancy a snack while roaming around the city, this is your spot!
