Food

Marmadukes cafe is a cafe that focuses on sustainable and independent practices. They source their food directly from farms, ensuring a farm-to-table experience. The cafe is housed in a beautifully redesigned old Royal Mail depot called the Old Sorting Office, which has a Scandinavian-inspired design. I often enjoy walking there from my shop, along Sharrowvale Road and through Nether Edge. One of my all-time favorite dishes from Marmadukes is their broccolini salad with lime and mint. It's the perfect place to meet friends for lunch or take a break from the day's tasks with a cup of coffee, or even indulge in a delicious slice of cheesecake.

Inspiration

When it comes to finding inspiration from nature, I couldn't ask for a better place than the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, located southwest of the city center. These gardens are home to the stunning Paxton glass pavilions, which are Grade II-listed and among the earliest curved glass structures ever built. With a breathtaking length of 90 meters, these glasshouses are made up of an impressive 18,060 glass panels.

The gardens are surrounded by ancient stone walls that provide a serene haven away from the noise of the outside world. With a wide variety of plants and a constantly changing landscape throughout the seasons, there is always something new to discover. I first visited the gardens while studying fine art and I vividly remember being enchanted by the beauty of hellebores, which bloom during the winter months.

Nether Edge is a spacious and leafy neighborhood filled with Victorian houses, independent shops, and welcoming cafes. It's the kind of place where you can lose yourself exploring charming vintage stores and wandering down tree-lined streets. Whether you're looking for Italian coffee, organic produce, natural wines, that elusive record you've been searching for, or even just a friendly place to get a key cut, Nether Edge has it all. And when it comes to dining, Bench is a must-visit neighborhood bistro and bar, offering incredible small-plate combinations made from locally sourced ingredients, as well as seasonal cocktails. If you venture down to Abbeydale Road, you'll find an eclectic mix of shops and warehouses that make up the Antiques Quarter. Here, you'll find thrift shops galore, a wonderful herbarium, the acclaimed Forge Bakehouse bakery, and, shamelessly, my own flower shop, Swallows and Damsons.

Green space

Sheffield is perfectly positioned on the border of the Peak District, allowing easy access to its mesmerizing wilderness. One such gem is Wyming Brook, located on the western edge of the city. The brook offers striking views of the Rivelin reservoirs and the sprawling cityscape. This forested paradise is filled with tranquil beauty, featuring moss-covered trees, gentle waterfalls, and enchanting wooden bridges that span across the valley. Among the towering trees, you'll find ancient larch, pine, and redwood, providing a haven for crossbills, dippers, and redstarts. Wyming Brook is a fantastic place to embark on memorable walks and even take a refreshing wild swim.

Nightlife

You might miss the entrance to the Picture House Social if you're not aware of its secret location. Nestled beneath a 1920s cinema, it offers a hidden underground world of entertainment. Enter through doors adorned with a vibrant rainbow mural and descend the winding staircase to discover a bustling bar with rich, dark wood decor and an inviting, dimly lit speakeasy atmosphere.

As you explore the interconnected spaces, you'll find a playful side to the venue. Indulge in Italian-inspired street food at the on-site canteen, challenge your friends to a game of ping pong in the games room, or test your strategic skills on the 70s-style shuffleboards in the shuffle shack room. Don't forget to catch a movie in the mini cinema for a complete night of fun and relaxation.
